Cathedral Academy Handbook
Chapel Attendance: Students are required to attend Morning Prayer and Holy Communion each day. Repeated tardiness concerning Morning Prayer attendance will result in a lowering of the Bible/Liturgics grade. We are a sacramental church and fully celebrate the seven sacraments of Christ’s Church. They are Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick or Unction, Reconciliation, and Holy Communion. We believe in the Episcopal form of government of the ancient church, which includes the offices of Bishop, Priest, and Deacon. All baptized Christians are invited to the Lord’s Table for Holy Communion. If a child is not baptized he or she is still invited to the communion rail to receive a blessing from the celebrating priest. Children are encouraged and invited to participate in the full sacramental life of the church. Children are required to serve as acolytes and readers during our communion service. Opportunities for counseling and confession are always made available for their spiritual development.
We adhere to both the Apostles Creed and Nicene Creed as professions of faith. We believe in Christ’s Real Presence in Holy Communion and that the bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ. We utilize the 1979 Book of Common Prayer as our form of worship along with more ancient liturgies for various church seasons. We observe the traditional church calendar, which includes Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Eastertide, Pentecost, Kingdomtide, Advent, and Christmastide.
Worship: Your child will attend liturgical services daily. In those services it is customary for congregants to stand to sing, recite the psalms, hear the Gospel reading, and show reverence for the Holy Communion service. Students will sit during sermons and to hear the Old Testament and New Testament readings. Kneeling will occur for certain prayers and the general confession. Our service employs the use of bread, wine, incense, bells, holy water, candles, blessed oil, and other sacramental items given to us by the church. Students will be asked from time to time to participate in services, such as carrying the cross, reading the lessons, assisting the priest, lighting the candles, etc. It is a good and holy thing for children to assist in the liturgy and it was Christ who said, “suffer the little children to come unto me.” Boys and girls sit on separate sides of the church. When one walks in boys sit to the right and girls sit to the left. Students are to occupy the first five rows of the pews. Following worship services girl students are dismissed first to help instill politeness towards women. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend Morning Prayer and Holy Communion each day.
The first and foremost task of Cathedral Academy is to educate your child spiritually, morally, and religiously. Education without Jesus Christ and Holy Church at the center is contrary to education itself. Your child will be open to teachings on virtue, morality, and at the very least will hear two Psalms, one Old Testament, one New Testament, one Gospel reading, and two sermons daily.
Accreditation: Our school is an independent church school and is not currently accredited by any organization. Colleges and Universities willingly accept students who graduate from non-accredited church schools. We also try to prepare each student to score aggressively on such standardized tests as the ACT and SAT. A student must score at least a 16 on the ACT to enter a college such as Wallace. Many other universities require higher ACT scores for admission. Colleges that have enrolled Cathedral Academy alumni include Concordia College. Our school is registered with the Alabama State Department of Education.
School Day: The school day runs from 8:00 AM to 2:45 PM Monday through Friday. A calendar is made available at the beginning of each school year. Our school observes the usual holidays, along with certain church functions, and designated holy days as observed by the Church.

Our other teachers hold degrees from University of Alabama, University of West Alabama, Ball State University, and Judson College.
Clergy: Caring clergy are available at all times to help meet the spiritual needs of the students. Our academy is graced by the spiritual covering of Archbishop Charles Jones, rector of the Cathedral of Christ the King.
Tuition: Our tuition is $160.00 per month for 12 months with a $250.00 curriculum fee for pre K3 – 6th grade and $300 for 7th – 12th grade for books and teaching materials. All students are required to be driven and picked up by their parents, appointed guardians, or designated individuals. Students are required to maintain a 2.0 average of their 4 core classes (math, science, English, and history) throughout the year. Eligibility will be check every 3 weeks as required by the SCAC.
Mascot and School Shield: The Cathedral Academy mascot is the lion. This reminds us that Jesus Christ is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Our shield consists of the Cross of St. George, a red cross on a white background; the upper left quadrant of the shield is blue with two gold keys crossed. This signifies the Keys of the Kingdom given to St. Peter. In the middle of the shield is a dove descending, this reminds of the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
College Courses: Our school currently has an agreement with Wallace Community College, which allows our Upper School students, who qualify, to participate in college credit courses. Course fees are incurred by the parents of the students. Students attend classes during a normal school day, usually one or two days a week. School Finances: Cathedral Academy’s finances, billing, and salaries are maintained by a local independent accounting firm. The academy practices the biblical law of the tithe and 10% of all gross income is donated to charity.
Purity and Chastity: Upper school/college preparatory students are expected to live chaste, moral lives. The students will be required from time to time to participate in classes that teach abstinence, purity, and chaste behavior. It is our mission to equip each student to remain pure until united to another individual in Holy Matrimony.
Boy-Girl Relationships: We realize there exists a natural attraction between males and females, however, we do not permit public displays of affection such as hugging, kissing, holding hands, touching, sitting on laps, etc. Sexual advances both verbal and written are forbidden.

Home School Covering: The Cathedral of Christ the King and Cathedral Academy act as a home school covering for those members of our church who wish to educate their children at home. The prerequisite for covering is that the parents be regularly attending members of the parish.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: Parents have the opportunity to speak with each teacher twice a semester (once per nine weeks) and at anytime at the discretion of the parent and teacher if the issue is deemed necessary.
Complaints: All complaints should be brought to the immediate teacher first, if it is not resolved then an appointment with the headmaster is necessary. If the parent is still not satisfied with resolution then the issue may be brought before the school board with the Archbishop presiding. We ask, before making the complaint, the following considerations:
1. Please give Cathedral Academy and it’s staff the benefit of the doubt.
2. Please note that your child’s issues with the school may be emotionally biased and do not necessarily contain all the facts.
3. Support the vision of Cathedral Academy, the Cathedral of Christ the King, and those committed to your child each and every day.
Report Cards: Report cards will be given at the end of each nine weeks. Grades, in and of themselves, are not the ultimate goal for learning. Grades help as landmarks as to where your child’s performance is and not his or her overall ability. Parents must take the initiative to discuss report cards with teachers if they feel it is necessary. Report card grades are given after careful consideration by each teacher. Please support the teacher in the grades given and work with the teacher and your child to help raise any grades or performance you are dissatisfied with.
Child Abuse Reporting: As to comply with the Alabama Child Abuse Reporting Law, Cathedral Academy must report any suspected cases of child abuse to the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
Technology: Cathedral Academy realizes the important role of technology in today’s society. As we work with limited resources it is difficult for our school to maintain an extensive network of computers and their upgrades. We do feel, however, that we are strategically placed to teach children critical and logical thinking skills that will help them learn and adapt to any technology they encounter.
Lost and Found: Cathedral Academy assumes no responsibility for items lost, misplaced, or improperly stored. The school does maintain a lost and found and items will be kept for a limited time. Items left in the lunchroom such as Tupperware and small food storage containers are generally thrown out during clean up if they are left behind.
